"The book, Roberto Clemente: Pride of the Pittsburgh Pirates, is among the more than 1 million titles that 'have been covered or stored and paused for student use' in Florida, NBC News reported. The freeze follows the Florida 'Stop W.O.K.E. Act' that DeSantis signed in 2022."

"More than 1 million titles"...That's about half the size of the collection of Carnegie Library's Main branch in Pittsburgh. The scope of this fascistic measure underscores both the absurdity and the horror of modern authoritarianism: the industrial scale erasure of ideas, of history -- of people.

Exchange at the post office a short while ago:

Me: "How are you?"

Clerk: "Good, how you doing?"

Me: "Oh fine. I'm off for the next few days, so, you know..."

Clerk: "Well that's never bad."

Me: [nodding, then after a pause] "Unless you've been laid off or fired, I guess."

Clerk: "That lasts longer than a few days."

Me: [smiling] "True." Then after another pause: "I grew up in New England, and we're masters of understatement, so I'll chalk that comment up to that."
